Al-Jabbar, the Arabic story of Orion

We know Orion to be a skilled hunter in Greek myths, but in Arabic astronomy, Orion is called “Al-Jabbar”, which means “The Giant”. Long ago, in the deserts of Arabia, the Arabs told stories of their hero, a giant, who legends say could fight enormous beasts, outwit clever enemies, and bring order to chaos.

Al-Jabbar was said to roam the night sky, carrying his mighty sword and belt of stars. He protected the earth from monsters and guided travelers who lost their way in the desert. His three bright stars known as “Al-Nizam”—the ones we know as Orion’s Belt—were his “string of pearls”. Travelers could follow the glow from the pearls and feel safe knowing the giant was watching over them.

Next time you are in a foreign land and find yourself lost, look for Al-Jabbar’s string of pearls as the Arabs have done for centuries. His glow can be seen all over the world and it can help you navigate your way home.
